Project type
Typography: "Design is where science and art break even."
Date
February 2023

This project was a midterm for my Typography 1 class. We were instructed to pick a quote that represented our design philosophy and experiment with how to lay it out in a way that communicated our interpretation of it. We had to use Myriad Pro Bold and were not allowed to use color.
I chose "Design is where science and art break even." as my quote. I've done a fair amount of fine art work, but when I look at designing a work, I follow a sort of scientific method. I experiment, hypothesize, test things, and ultimately use trial and error to find the best possible design.
At first, I worked with physical materials of paper, an X-Acto knife, and tape. Through this assignment, I began using layouts where the words science and art interacted. I then considered how this quote could move across the page, similar to the way aspects of design, science, and art revolve around the rapid expansion and creation of thoughts and ideas. From here, I started using Adobe Illustrator and experimented with science and art as the left and right lobes of the brain.
After this initial experimentation, I ultimately realized that my interpretation of this quote was twofold. First, I pictured science and art as physically equal, or as holding the same weight. To communicate this, I used three different layouts: two different types of scales and a seesaw. In all three cases, the scales and seesaw are created from the word 'design', because this is WHERE science and art are even.
Secondly, I considered science and art as breaking even by force, where they are colliding and exploding to create design. In this way, I used the imagery of colliding subway carts to communicate this rapidity. I played around with opacity, duplication, density, and angles in an attempt to communicate the rapid movement of these words.
Overall, this project is representative of my design process. I experiment by creating variations and learning from them, where my ideas develop with both depth and craftsmanship.
